Bathrooms & Shower Upgrade Los Angeles

People over the age of 80 will tell you stories about their childhood and those tales might include stories of having to walk outside on a cold winter night to visit the “outhouse” with the proverbial moon on the door. The “facility” was nothing more than a hole in the ground covered by a shed and it was best to minimize the time spent doing one’s business in such an uncomfortable place. Those same people can also tell you how thrilled they were with indoor plumbing and other things that we take for granted today.
The modern bathroom has evolved into a place that is comfortable if not luxurious.
It is even known as the “reading room” where a person seeking some privacy can read an e-book or play a game on their cell phone. A long hot bath or shower literally washes away the daily stress and can mentally prepare you for the day ahead. So why not maximize that experience with a bathroom improvement with a custom shower?
The options are endless. You can replace the bathroom floor with tile and even get a heated floor. A new toilet that is more comfortable and uses less water per flush is a good addition. Consider installing grab bars for aging baby boomers or adding a convenient electrical outlet so your millennial children can keep their treasured cellphones charged while they avail themselves of social media. The most important update, however, will be with the bathtub or shower and that is the focus of this article.
For most people the first consideration for any home improvement project is their budget for the job and this will define the project limitations. Your dream of gold-plated faucets will give way to a standard faucet from Walmart or Home Depot and there will be other compromises as well.
There are three options with bathtubs or showers
There is no existing bathtub or shower. In this case new plumbing will be needed and this involves tearing out the walls and extending water pipes to the new configuration. It is best to use the services of a contractor who specializes in bathroom work for best results and who will handle any required permitting.
Existing bathtub with no shower and vice versa. Adding a shower is a relatively minor project with some minor plumbing to install the showerhead and shower curtain and possibly doors. Adding a bathtub to an existing shower is similar but the weight and size of the added tub will be a big consideration.
Existing shower and bathtub that needs a total upgrade. The good thing is that the plumbing exists so more of the budget can be devoted to the actual shower head and tub that may allow some added luxury like water jets to turn the tub into a jacuzzi.
For any of the three options consider replacing any existing tub and shower with a prefab unit that will fit nicely into any space and allow for many options. The prefab unit is easily installed and can use existing plumbing as well. If there is a home improvement expo in your area, there will be a few prefab bathroom manufacturers and installers that will be happy to bid on your job and dispense advice. Be sure to take some photos or drawings to help with any quotes or estimates.
When choosing how to upgrade your bathroom in any manner some consideration must be given as to who will actually be using it. Are there other bathtubs in the house? If yes, then decide if the second tub us needed and save some money with just a new shower. Are you planning to sell the house in the next year or so? If yes, think about upgrading for the next owner and not so much for yourself. Either way a good bathtub /shower upgrade will add value to your house and certainly make an impression on those older folks with the “outhouse experience”.
